CBS 60 Minutes, which aired March 8, 1998

Most people have heard about chemical weapons - the Pentagon estimates Saddam Hussein is hiding 200 tons of these weapons of mass destruction. Most people do not know that what Hussein purportedly has, is just a fraction of what is here in the United States.

Most of these weapons are 30 to 40 years old, and some are beginning to leak, posing a threat to the tens of thousands of people who live near the eight chemical depots.

These depots are located in Utah, Kentucky, Indiana, Maryland, Colorado, Alabama, Arkansas, and Oregon.

Nine years ago, Congress voted to pass legislation mandating that the communities around the chemical weapons depots be given maximum protection. So far, the government has allocated $600 million to buy emergency gear for these communities to prepare them for possible accidents.

60 Minutes decided it was time to take a look at the depots and see what kind of protection the communities have received. What co-editor Steve Kroft found out will surprise you.

Most of these weapons are 30 to 40 years old, and some are beginning to leak, posing a threat to the tens of thousands of people who live near the eight chemical depots.

(My note, they interviewed an Oregon community. They were given a 12 inch square cardboard box, with 1 hand held stop sign and a turn signal to direct traffic, two flashlites and a few batteries. That is it for a community of 35,000.)

The General Accountant for the program said all the money had been spent on planning how to spend the money. ($600,000,000.00 gone, and absolutely nothing accomplished in 9 years. (THIS IS FRAUD !!!! ed) )

Why don't they simply destroy the old chemical weapons? The equipment to launch them has been scrapped, and they are leaking!

Why do we have these illegal, immoral weapons at all?

Write your legislature's ! Ask them what are they going to do about this dangerous situation.
